InfraStruXure® System Cures Medical Company’s Power Malady
“HMG faces the same issues many companies do: increasing server density places greater demands on power and cooling. We chose APC® by Schneider Electric to help us solve these challenges because it is a company we knew, had built a relationship with, and trusted to deliver a workable solution in the amount of time desired.”

Holston Medical Group
“Holston Medical Group (HMG) is a privately owned medical company in Tennessee with 15 locations. Since 1977 we have grown from a handful of family physicians to a large, multi-specialty practice of more than 150 physicians, specialists, and other providers caring for about 240,000 patients.
“Our data center is the core for providing state-of-the-art patient care, such as real-time 24x7 access to our electronic medical records at the point of care for all of our providers, as well as patient access to a portion of their medical records through a secure Web-based portal. As we have migrated to an almost completely paperless or electronic process, system downtime creates substantial stress. At its worst, downtime has the potential to negatively affect patient care. It also costs about $50,000 per day in lost revenue.
“HMG faces the same issues many companies do: increasing server density places greater demands on power and cooling. Our smaller rack-mounted UPSs were consuming rack space and not delivering enough power to support the servers within a single rack. During an outage, we needed enough power and runtime for an employee to drive into the office to ensure the auto-transfer switch on the generator had transferred.
“We chose APC® by Schneider Electric to help us solve these challenges because it is a company we knew, had built a relationship with, and trusted to deliver a workable solution in the amount of time desired. Its InfraStruXure® architecture delivered a scalable, modular solution that can grow with our increasing demands.
“The solution immediately solved our increased demands for power and allowed us to create redundant power paths to our end devices. It saves us time as we don’t have to mess with a bunch of individual UPS units when our needs change. We also benefit by recovering previously used rack space and by not needing to take the system down to replace batteries. After the initial investment, the ongoing total cost of ownership can be spread out over several years.
“We now rely on InfraStruXure to provide power for all our servers and systems, including practice management and electronic medical records. The cost of the system was less than a week’s worth of potential lost revenue if those two applications were down.
“We are extremely satisfied with APC’s attention to detail. With all its preparation and planning, I had no concerns with being on vacation and out of the area the week this solution was installed.”
